Pros and Cons of AI
Artificial Intelligence is beginning to be integrated into everyday life and as such it has begun to affect all of us. AI brings many benefits to the organizations that employ it however, there are drawbacks to this emerging technology. Below is a brief list of the pro's and con's associated with AI.
Pro's
Less Error
Human error is removed from the equation allowing computers to process data error free regardless of the size of the dataset.
No need for Engagement
Artificial Intelligence does not get bored, it does not get tired, its attention does not wander. AI can handle repetitive and mundane tasks quickly and efficiently increasing productivity.
Tireless
AI can work indefinitely while human workers require breaks for rest, eating, and personal needs. An AI will continue to perform its assigned function until told otherwise.
Assuming Risk
There are many environments where humans can not operate safely however, AI would be able to function. Space and deep-sea exploration are two fields where AI is being employed to gather data humans would not be able to.
Increased Productivity
Artificial Intelligence increases the productivity of everyone when employed alongside human workers. AI can automatically correct small errors freeing human time or sift through huge volumes of data and quickly provide the pertinent details.
Con's
Job loss
Artificial Intelligence, without a doubt, will reduce the need for low skilled workers. Assembly line workers, taxi drivers, and custodial workers are already being threatened. As AI continues to advance more industries will be affected.
Lack of judgement
Human beings can take the unique circumstances surrounding an event into account when making a decision, AI has not advanced to that point.
Lack of Creativity
Currently AI can be programmed to perform a multitude of tasks but is limited to the strict letter of its programing and as such is unable to come up with creative solutions to problems it may encounter.
Creation of Dependency
As technology continues to become a greater part of everyday life the ability of humanity to function properly becomes inextricably linked to the functionality of our technology. This dependency will only increase as our technology becomes more sophisticated and useful.
Expensive Implementation
Artificial Intelligence systems are costly to install, maintain and repair which places many of the benefits of AI outside of the reach of most business and individuals.
