Future Potential of AI

As we have discussed AI has been affecting our lives indirectly for decades and much more directly in recent years. As the technology powering artificial intelligence advances we can expect the impact on our daily lives to increase.

One effect of advances in artificial intelligence will be increasing safety and security as a result of AI powered drones. Drones have the ability to quickly and efficiently move emergency supplies to disaster affected areas which would be difficult if not impossible for traditional first responders to reach. Additionally, drones can safely enter environments humans cannot, allowing for inspections that would be impossible otherwise.

Artificial Intelligence also has the capacity to greatly enhance the healthcare system. Hospital error was the third-leading cause of death in the united states in 2018 according to CNBC and AI systems have the capacity to greatly reduce or even eliminate hospital error thanks to their error free nature. Additionally, AI has the potential to substantially increase operational efficiency thereby reducing healthcare costs by a projected $150 Billion annually in the United States alone.

Another area where AI will have a large impact in the future is Business as AI has the capacity to enhance human ability. Most people know that IBM made a computer that was able to defeat the world chess grand-master however, what many do not know about is what is known as a 'centaur' or an AI-human chess team. This combination is usually able to defeat the best AI only chess program. It works because the human receives input and suggestions as to how to proceed that they are then free to ignore. The AI will catch the silly mistakes most humans would make and show you the most likely strategy strategies of the opponent machine which greatly augments the human's ability to make effective decisions. This model has the potential to bring a great deal of value to the workplace across most lines of business by enhancing the productivity of each employee.
